Breast Asymmetry

Dr. Broumand’s expertise in breast asymmetry correction surgery combines advanced techniques with a meticulous approach to achieve balanced, natural-looking results for patients in New York City.

No woman’s breasts are naturally symmetrical. Most often, breast asymmetries form during adolescence when the breasts are developing. Factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, and the natural aging process can make any discrepancies more pronounced for women at various ages. Fortunately, if you are bothered by subtle or prominent differences between your breasts, there are numerous cosmetic solutions available. At 740 Park Plastic Surgery in NYC, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Stafford Broumand is highly experienced in correcting breast asymmetries ranging from volume and shape variances to uneven nipple size and positioning. Based on your unique needs and desires, our doctor can help you improve the overall balance and symmetry of your breasts with beautiful, natural-looking results.

What Is Breast Asymmetry Correction Surgery?

Breast asymmetry correction is a breast surgery designed to address differences in the size, shape, or position of a woman’s breasts, commonly involving asymmetrical breasts or conditions like tuberous breasts. This surgical procedure can include breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction to enhance breast symmetry and appearance. By reshaping the breast tissue and removing excess skin, the surgery aims to improve breast shape and create a balanced, harmonious look. Many women seek this surgery to alleviate self-consciousness and achieve a more proportionate breast appearance, ultimately boosting their confidence and self-esteem.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Asymmetry Correction?

Breast Asymmetry correction can be an excellent option for women seeking to improve the overall size and appearance of their breasts. Good candidates for this procedure are typically those who can relate to one or more of the following:

  • Want a more symmetrical breast size.
  • Desire to evenly fill out swimsuits and/or clothing.
  • Have disproportionately sized and/or shaped breasts
  • Have experienced breast volume loss due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight reduction, and/or the process of aging.
  • Have a minor amount of breast drooping accompanied by volume loss

Along with these qualifications, ideal Breast Asymmetry correction candidates must be in good overall health, have no unmanaged medical conditions, and have stopped smoking for at least two weeks leading up to their procedure. In addition, women who have recently had children should wait a minimum of one to two months following the cessation of breastfeeding in order for an accurate preoperative breast size to be determined. All of these factors will be discussed in full detail at the time of your consultation.

Preparing for Breast Asymmetry Correction

To begin the consultation, your surgeon will first listen to your aesthetic goals and conduct a physical exam to make sure your concern(s) is something that can be addressed effectively with Breast Asymmetry correction. Following the physical assessment, he will cover medical history, family history, social history, and any prior surgical history to make sure he understands the entire picture. It is important for your surgeon to really grasp the full extent of your motivation for pursuing aesthetic enhancement due to the thoughtful planning and consideration.

Once your aesthetic desires are clear, Dr. Broumand will then continue the conversation by outlining a customized treatment plan that takes into consideration everything from chest size and hip width to body shape and profile. Your surgeon will also identify what a reasonable goal for the procedure would be, as well as what type of outcome can be expected. This is accomplished through VECTRA® XT 3D imaging—a state-of-the-art system that has revolutionized the breast procedure planning process. With this innovative device, you are able to select from numerous implant options and view a three dimensional image of how these implants may look on your own body.

The Breast Asymmetry Correction Procedure

On the day of surgery, you will come into our office and be greeted by our staff. Once settled, you will meet our operating room team who our doctor has worked with for over 20 years. Your surgeon will review the pre-op process and bring you into the operating room to get changed, go through consents, and make sure everything is in order to proceed. We strive to make our operating room a very comfortable environment, with strict attention paid to safety.

The average breast procedure takes 1 to 1.5 hours, performed under general anesthesia. Tiny incisions are made at the site pre-determined during your consultation.
If necessary, breast implants are then carefully inserted through these incisions and positioned depending on your specific needs. When placing silicone breast implants, Dr. Broumand often employs the Keller Funnel™ “No-Touch” technique. This innovative approach enables implants to be inserted into the breast pocket without coming into contact with any skin. Ultimately, Dr. Broumand believes this advanced implant placement technique can help lower the chance of capsular contracture, diminish the risk of bacterial infection and/or trauma to the outer shell of the implant, and minimize residual scarring. Once the implants are properly situated, the incisions are carefully closed using small sutures.

Once the Breast Asymmetry correction is complete, the same operating room team—as well as our board-certified anesthesiologist—will be present to greet you. You will wake up feeling incredibly well—almost as if waking from a long nap. Our team will help walk with assistance to a recovery room. You will be in this room for about an hour as our surgical team makes sure you are comfortable to go home. They then will coordinate with a friend or family member for you to be picked up and taken home safely the same day.
