Chin Augmentation
Chin Augmentation is a commonly performed procedure on both men and women, regardless of age. The chin is an important facial landmark that works to define the profile. The chin also helps to visually distinguish the face from the neck, especially with age. Chin Augmentation is commonly combined with Rhinoplasty to help harmonize facial proportions.
Chin Augmentation can be performed surgically by placing an implant, or non-surgically with dermal fillers. An extension of Chin Augmentation exists in the form of Jawline Enhancement, also commonly performed with dermal fillers. Chin implants are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, and are manufactured from both solid and semi-solid materials. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss your options for Chin Augmentation and will work with you to determine which option makes the most sense with your expectation and desires. With our surgeons’ expertise, Chin Augmentation creates a dramatic improvement to the overall facial balance of proportion while appearing entirely natural.
Surgical Chin Augmentation:
The most standard approach involves an inch-long, tiny incision under the chin, often in a naturally occurring crease. This approach gives direct access to the lower jawbone. Revisions of prior chin enhancements are typically performed through this incision.
Patients who prefer not to have any visible scar may opt for the approach that involves making an incision inside the mouth. In this case, the incision is made near the lower border of the lower lip. This approach has the advantage of no visible scar but requires meticulous attention to oral hygiene for several days following the procedure. Details regarding post-operative care will be reviewed at the time of your consultation.
Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation:
For those looking for a more modest enhancement or gradual change, dermal fillers can often be used to increase the projection of the chin. Our plastic surgeons use hyaluronic acid (HA) products, such as Juvederm Voluma, to perform such augmentations.
Chin augmentation using dermal fillers is also ideal for those who do not yet feel ready to make the commitment required for placement of a permanent implant. Using this method, patients can explore the degree of projection which they are looking for. Dermal filler will be absorbed naturally by the body, or can be immediately reversed. Juvederm Voluma is unique in that its FDA indication states that it can last as long as two years. This, as well as the fact that it can be reversed, makes Juvederm Voluma an attractive dermal filler option for non-surgical Chin Augmentation.
